Acoustic correlates and perceptual cues of word and sentence stress: Mainly English and Dutch
نویسنده
چکیده
This is an abridged version of a tutorial on the (older) experimental literature on the acoustic correlates of, and their contribution to, human stress perception, mainly on the basis of research on English and Dutch. The emphasis is on establishing the relative importance of correlates amd cues. The conclusion is that a reliable acoustic correlate (e.g. peak intensity) is not necessarily a strong perceptual cue. Conversely, the strongest perceptual cue (i.e. pitch change) is acoustically an unreliable correlate. The full tutorial will be accessible at https://openaccess.leidenuniv.nl/search?query=heuven.

Correlates of Chinese neutral tone perception in different contexts
A psychoacoustic experiment was conducted to investigate correlates of neutral tone perception and the distribution of the perceptual space in three contexts, i.e. isolation, on-focus and post-focus for Standard Chinese. To this end, we adopted a minimal word pair, i.e. /ʂɤtəәu/(“蛇头”, head of snake) and /ʂɤtəәu/ (“舌头”, tongue) where tonal contrast is between a neutral tone T0 and a rising tone ...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملAcoustic Cues of Stress and Accent in Catalan*
The goal of this paper is to examine the phonetic correlates of stress and accent in Catalan. We analyzed five acoustic correlates of stress (syllable duration, spectral balance, vowel quality, vowel pitch, and vowel intensity) in two stress conditions and in two accent conditions, which is to say, in stressed and unstressed syllables in both accented and unaccented environments (that is, appos...
متن کاملAcoustic correlates of prosodic prominence for naïve listeners of American English
0. Introduction This study examines the acoustic correlates of prosodic prominence as perceived by a large number of native listeners of American English who are naïve to the phonetics and phonology of prosody. In English, as in other stress languages, speech utterances are chunked into smaller prosodic phrases, and within a prosodic phrase some words are assigned phrasal stress, which typicall...
متن کاملPerceiving unstressed vowels in foreign-accented English.
This paper investigated how foreign-accented stress cues affect on-line speech comprehension in British speakers of English. While unstressed English vowels are usually reduced to /ə/, Dutch speakers of English only slightly centralize them. Speakers of both languages differentiate stress by suprasegmentals (duration and intensity). In a cross-modal priming experiment, English listeners heard s...
